Articles on the Gospel of St. Matthew will be published here as they are prepared for various adult Sunday School and Bible Study activities.

The author of this Gospel was the apostle Matthew, who was among the first disciples called by Jesus. Matthew, whose name means gift of the Lord, was a tax collector who left his work to follow Jesus (Matthew 9:9-13). In Mark and Luke he is called by his other name, Levi.  His Gospel was written in Greek for Jewish readers who were obviously Greek-speaking.  Matthew was concerned with fulfillment of the Hebrew Scriptures  He has more quotations from and allusions to the Scriptures than any other New Testament author  We see the Jewishness of his writing in his tracing of Jesus' descent from Abraham (Matthew1:1-17); his lack of explanation of Jewish customs; his use of Jewish terminology (e.g., kingdom of heaven, in order to avoid using the name of God; and, his emphasis on Jesus' role as "Son of David" (Matthew 1:1; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30-31; 21:9,15; 22:41-45).

Matthew's purpose was to prove to Jewish readers that Jesus is their Messiah.  He illustrates how Jesus in his life and ministry fulfilled the Scriptures.  He drove home his theme that Jesus is the fulfillment of the scriptural predictions of the Messiah.
