Image of Jesus preaching the Sermon on the Mount

Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah (Jeremiah 31:31/ESV)

Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled. (Luke 24:44/ESV)
And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. (Luke 22:20/ESV; c.f., Mark 14:24)

The New Testament, as the Christian Churches usually recognize it, is made up of twenty-seven different books attributed to eight different authors, six of whom are numbered among the Apostles (Matthew, John, Paul, James, Peter, Jude) and two among their immediate disciples (Mark, Luke).  The contents and the literary form of these writings may be divided into historical books (Gospels and Acts), didactic books (Epistles), and a prophetical book (Apocalypse).  Before the name of the New Testament had come into use the writers of the latter half of the second century used to say Gospel and Apostolic writings and similar titles.

Additional articles on the books of the New Testament will be published here as they are prepared for various adult Sunday School and Bible Study activities.
